It's Southwest
Virginia Museum Historical
State Park's 60th Anniversary Year!
2008 marks
the 60th Anniversary of the Southwest Virginia Museum
and the celebration begins on March 1st as we re-open for
the season! Special exhibits and events throughout the
year will highlight the museum's six decades of excellence
and say "thank you" to the friends and neighbors who have
been with us through the years. Our "official"
celebration will take place on Sunday, May 25. This
day-long event will honor the museum as well as the people
who have helped make Southwest Virginia a unique and special
place in the Commonwealth. Watch for more details
about this event in the weeks to come.
Our schedule
is filled with festivals and special events that celebrate
our history, culture and community. The Quilt Show,
the Community Art Show, and the Festival of Trees showcase
the artistic talents of our friends and neighbors; our new
Appalachian Folk Festival will bring together artisans from
around the region who keep alive the traditional arts and
crafts of our ancestors; and the "Gathering in the Gap"
music festival celebrates the rich tradition of music in
Southwest Virginia. Local history takes center stage
with special events like "Mystery in the Mountains" and our
60th Anniversary Victorian "German" Social. Both
events offer participants the chance to step back in time
and experience life in the Big Stone Gap of yesteryear.
This year's
children's program offers area youth an opportunity to
reconnect with nature and get in touch with our past.
Our Children's Summer Series program this year will be
offering a "mini-camp" that will focus on life in the 1940's
and 1950's. Additional children's programs will
support the Virginia State Parks' "Children and Nature"
initiative. As always, we aim to provide our young
people the opportunity to learn and play in a safe
environment.
2008 is a
special year for us and we hope it will be for you as well.
Come help us celebrate!
