Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park

  • September 1 - 30  "Appalachian Artists:  A Community Art Show" opens.  The beauty and rich cultural heritage of the Central Appalachians has inspired artists for centuries.  The Southwest Virginia Museum is pleased to present the works of today's local artists in a show that celebrates the creativity and talents of our friends and neighbors.  Regular admission rates apply.
     
  • September 5 - First Saturday Community Coffeehouse  7:00 - 9:00 PM.  Each month, a different host performer takes center stage and welcomes all family-friendly performers to step up to the open mic.  Come and hear music, poetry, and stories from some of the community's best performers.  Admission is free.  Refreshments are available for purchase.  All performers are asked to arrive by 6:45 PM for sign-in and scheduling.
     
  • September 19 - Appalachian Folk Life Festival  12:00 - 5:00 PM.  Celebrate the history and culture of Appalachia.  Visit with local crafters who will demonstrate a variety of skills that are synonymous with mountain life.  From bee-keeping to quilting bees, there will be something for everyone at this educational and entertaining event!  This event is free.
     
  • September 26 - Tiny Tinsmiths:  Beginners' Level  11:00 AM - 12:30 PMAdvanced Level  1:30 - 3:00 PM
    Tin has long been used in decorative and functional items around the home.  Punched in tin items were common in pioneer and Victorian homes and the local tinsmith's skills were highly valued in the community.  These workshops will teach children the art of tin punching.  In the beginners' class, children ages 6-10 will craft simple punched tin ornaments.  The advanced class offers participants ages 11-15 the opportunity to create a more intricate lantern.  There is a $5.00 fee for each class.  Registration and payment deadline is Friday, September 18.  Each class is limited to 20 participants.
