Come and enjoy a variety of stories, songs, dances and surprises!  All family-friendly performers are invited to this open mic event held the first Saturday of each month.  If performing, please arrive by 6:45 PM.  Free admission; coffee, cake and soft drinks  available for purchase.


  Confederate Harmonies - The Music of Southern Women and Their Fighting Men

Dr. Gary Crum of UVA-Wise will present a program which looks at the role of music in the Confederate military units and on the Southern home-fronts.  Of particular emphasis will be the women of the Confederary - songs by them and bout them.  Dr. Crum will perform Carrie Belle Sinclair's "The Homespun Dress" and other Civil War melodies.  This program is free.

  Lunch on the Lawn

Get an early start to the weekend!  Join us for a "brown bag" lunch on the museum's grounds and be entertained by area musicians.  Free Admission; bring your own lunch or order one from the museum for $5.00.  Call each week for meal options.  Orders must be placed by 10:00 am each Friday.

The Friends of the Museum, a not-for-profit support group that assists the Southwest Virginia Museum, is hosting a community concert on the museum lawn.  Watch for further details.

  Old Traditions/New Traditions: 60 Years of the Southwest Virginia Museum

Follow the museum from its establishment in 1948 to today and see how the collection, the building, and approaches to the care and display of artifacts help to tell the story of the museum, its curators, collections, and educational activities of the last six decades.  Regular admission rates apply.

June 16 - October 12

 

Over the last 60 years, the Southwest Virginia Museum has amassed an impressive collection of artifacts, many of which are displayed on a rotating basis.  In celebration of the 60th Anniversary, each museum staff member has picked his or her favorite item from the archives.  These treasures have been assembled together to demonstrate the depth and breadth of the museum's collection and to offer a glimpse into not only the archives, but also the interests of staff at the Southwest Virginia Museum.  Regular admission rates apply.

 

   Election Day

June 16 - October 12 at the MECC Library Gallery

 

In true election-year spirit, see portraits of elected officials from Southwest Virginia and campaign memorabilia from local candidates and delegates.  This exhibit is free.

 

   Appalachian Artists - A Community Art Show

September 1-30

The beauty and rich cultural heritage of the Central Appalachians has inspired artists for centuries.  The Southwest Virginia Museum is pleased to present the works of today's local artists in a show that celebrates the creativity and talents of our friends and neighbors.  Regular admission rates apply.

   Scarecrow Town

September 30 - October 26
 


To help celebrate the fall harvest, 5th grade classes from around the region are invited to design and construct scarecrows and place them on the museum's grounds.  Come by and see the creativity and artistry of our local youth and vote for your favorite scarecrows.  This exhibit is free.
 
   A Measure of Excellence -- Virginia McChesney and Early Southwest Virginia Bands

Saturday, October 11 at Bullitt Park

1-5 PM

Celebrate Virginia McChesney a pioneer in our regional music, and explore Southwest Virginia's rich musical heritage.  Attend the 28th Annual McChesney Band Festival at Bullitt Park and view the museum's exhibit on early area bands.  An admission fee to the Band Festival applies.
