Confederate Harmonies - The Music of
Southern Women and Their Fighting Men

Dr. Gary
Crum of UVA-Wise will present a program
which looks at the role of music in the
Confederate military units and on the
Southern home-fronts. Of
particular emphasis will be the women of
the Confederary - songs by them and bout
them. Dr. Crum will perform Carrie
Belle Sinclair's "The Homespun Dress"
and other Civil War melodies. This
program is free.

Over the last 60 years, the Southwest Virginia
Museum has amassed an impressive collection of
artifacts, many of which are displayed on a
rotating basis. In celebration of the 60th
Anniversary, each museum staff member has picked
his or her favorite item from the archives.
These treasures have been assembled together to
demonstrate the depth and breadth of the
museum's collection and to offer a glimpse into
not only the archives, but also the interests of
staff at the Southwest Virginia Museum.

In
true election-year spirit, see portraits of
elected officials from Southwest Virginia and
campaign memorabilia from local candidates and

Appalachian Artists - A Community Art Show

The beauty and rich cultural heritage of the
Central Appalachians has inspired artists for
centuries. The Southwest Virginia Museum
is pleased to present the works of today's local
artists in a show that celebrates the creativity
and talents of our friends and neighbors.

Scarecrow Town

To help celebrate the fall harvest, 5th grade
classes from around the region are invited to
design and construct scarecrows and place them
on the museum's grounds. Come by and see
the creativity and artistry of our local youth
and vote for your favorite scarecrows.

A Measure of Excellence -- Virginia McChesney
and Early Southwest Virginia Bands

Celebrate Virginia McChesney a pioneer in our
regional music, and explore Southwest Virginia's
rich musical heritage. Attend the 28th
Annual McChesney Band Festival at Bullitt Park
and view the museum's exhibit on early area
bands. An admission fee to the Band
Festival applies.
